Dinner, with a Side of Auto Glass
By Abby Bowman
I sure can talk a lot for someone who makes her living by writing. Social media has recently re-popularized the term “yapper” for people who can chatter away about anything and everything. Personally, I’m fond of the expression “gift of gab.”
With my gift of gab, I prefer to yap about the most prominent things in my life. Right now, one of those is the auto glass industry. Unfortunately for my friends and family, this means they receive an involuntary education about the ins and outs of auto glass.
After AGRR magazine is put to bed, you can find me explaining the same news again to my loved ones. I generally do so with all the vigor and passion of a defense lawyer, my hands waving in the air to emphasize each fact.
At least I typically supply dinner and some wine to my usual victim: my best friend. She’s fond of collecting information she’ll probably never use anyway, so this feels like a fair trade.
After several dinnertime rants, I began to realize something. Whether or not this auto glass oration is helping my friends and family, it is certainly helping me. Somewhere in the midst of finding a way to explain what third-party administrators are and their function in the industry, I developed a deeper understanding of the subject myself. While discussing articles I’ve written, I develop ideas for more. And, of course, while detailing the things I’ve done in a week, I inevitably remember things I forgot to do and leap up and jot them down on my to-do list.
Though I have known for a long time that teaching or discussing can be the best way to learn, I am always surprised just how well it works. So, in an effort to reinforce the concept with myself, let me recommend it to you.
With everything currently happening in the industry and with Auto Glass Week™ just around the corner, this issue of AGRR is particularly filled with information and analysis. As you peruse it, try taking a moment to summarize what you’re reading to a willing loved one. Though you might want to buy them dinner first.
If you’d like to talk to me about the auto glass industry, look for me at Auto Glass Week™. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Want to actually enjoy drinks or dinner with a side of auto glass? There are some Auto Glass Week™ events that you might enjoy. Visit www.autoglassweek.com to learn more, but act quickly. Space is limited.
