Field Trips: Auto Glass Edition
By Abby Bowman
I’ve always loved field trips. Most kids do, but mine were a little different. I was homeschooled, which means field trips frequently included excursions that could last anywhere from the typical few hours at an aquarium or museum to a few days in another city.
Yes, that’s right: days. Life and school meld into one when you’re educated at home. Family vacations become educational. For example, one vacation consisted of my siblings, parents and I visiting several adjacent Civil War battlefields over the course of a week.
Family vacations in Mexico led us to the ruins of ancient Mayan cities, where we noted everything we’d read in our history books – and I do mean everything. I vaguely remember squinting at the stone blocks comprising an ancient temple to see how even they were.
Spending my childhood on completely immersive field trips helped shape how I learn. My recent trip to Don’s Mobile Glass in Modesto, California, was just the experience I needed to solidify my understanding of an auto glass technician’s job. I got to feel what it was like to replace a windshield, repair a rock chip and perform a recalibration with my own two hands. You can read more about my experience on page 20 to see what I enjoyed and what I struggled with. That is one field trip I’d definitely like to take again.
