Field of Vision January/February 2022

A Year Like No Other

By Tara Taffera

2022 has arrived, and what a year it will be for those who work with glass of any type—including auto glass. Did you know that 2022 has been designated as The International Year of Glass by the United Nations (UN)?

This recognition comes after the International Commission on Glass (ICG), the Community of Glass Associations (CGA) and the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Glass (ICOM-Glass) began the journey in 2018, gaining support from 1,500 universities and research centers, societies and associations, museums, artists, educators, manufacturers and companies in 78 countries on five continents. The formal resolution was approved at the UN General Assembly on May 18, 2021.

2022 will be a great year of celebrating across all sectors of the glass industry, from art and architecture, to research and technology. Thousands of activities are planned to take place around the world. In the U.S., the North American International Year of Glass Steering
Committee is hosting the National Day of Glass event, April 5-7, 2022 at the Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C.

How will you celebrate or use this as a way to highlight your company in 2022? Companies in many sectors are already taking ownership and are using their website, social media, and other avenues to advocate glass more than ever this year. If you have something in the works, or are planning anything, please drop me a line at ttaffera@glass.com.

But that’s not the only good news I have for you this month—there is a lot of relevant market information in this issue that may help you in your business.

Want to have you finger on the major players in the market? Check out AGRR’s list of Top Auto Glass Retailers on page 16. What about the latest advances in setting tools? You can find that on page 22. Finally, AGRR looks into the future and talks to glass shop owners who discuss whether they will offer cryptocurrency as a payment option in the coming years. It’s not as far away as you may think.

Here’s to a productive 2022. It’s my hope that by the end of the year you truly will be celebrating that this was indeed the year of glass. Whatever that means for your shop, make it a successful year.
